directors' biography

Herbert “Herb” Hill, Jr.—Professional Videographer and Photographer, Golf Enthusiast, Junior Golf Advocate and Mentor serves as one of the first Board Members of the Black Heritage Tour (BHT) Golf Challenge, Inc.  Herb, a native of the historic North Brentwood Township in Prince George County, Maryland, grew up with a robust sense of history and community— strong families living and working together.  For Brentwood, in the city's early days, this area was a vast and sparsely populated territory which the land featured scattered farmsteads, undeveloped forested land, and a number of country estate houses atop hills with scenic views.  One such estate was Brentwood, located on the northeast side of city atop a gently sloping hill east of Boundary Street and New York Avenue.  The town is named after the Brentwood estate which was built in 1817 by Robert Brent in Northeast Washington, D.C.  The town was originally settled by African American veterans of the American Civil War, who purchased lots from their former commander, Capt. Wallace A. Bartlett, beginning in 1887.  Growing up in this historic area, Herb’s family emphasized the need for community integration and inclusion with a proudness of strong family values due to several challenges many families faced during that time.  With the family support, Herb later graduated from Northwestern High School in 1977.  After graduating high school, Herb continued his higher education by attending Robert Morris College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1978 until 1980 majoring in Business Administration within the Airline Services Industry.  As time would say so, Herb departed college early and took a position as a Printing Technician with Xerox which today sells print and digital document products and services in more than 160 countries.  While at Xerox, Herb completed all required printer’s training and certifications which he was later promoted to a Printing Engineer Technician working on large printing machines and data packs.  After 28 years of service with Xerox, the company transitioned his printing expertise to work with one of their clients, Legg Mason Investment Co., headquartered in Baltimore, which today is a division of Franklin Templeton Investments who managed large financial investments and asset management.  While at Legg Mason Investment Co. in 1993, Herb worked as a Technician Supervisor teaching and training others about new printing ideas, systems and techniques until 2003.  Seeking a different line of work after 10 years, Herb decided to leave Legg Mason Investment Co. for an opportunity to engage and socialize with a broader population of people thereby choosing to serve youth and families work with the Prince George’s County School District in Transportation Operations.  After over 18 years of work in Transportation Operations, Herb will be looking forward to retiring in June 2021.  Like many who plays golf finds the game later on in life, Herb started playing golf at the age of 50 and he like many others became hooked on the game. He was introduced to the game of golf by a man of God, who later became his close friend and minister.  Just he and the “Preacher” would work on his game at the Marlton Golf Course in Upper Marlboro, MD.   Today, you can find Herb working diligently helping others and needy families on their lives, homes and other unmet needs throughout the church, to include leading technology and transportation ministries to name a few.   Herb accepted the opportunity to serve with BHT Golf Challenge, Inc. to provide professional videography and photography services of the fundraisers and to assist in improving the lives of our youth by mentoring and helping them make good and wise choices in life.  His message to the youth is similar to the challenges we face on the golf course, “be truthful and honest first to yourself then others.  If you by chance run into a problem, get back up there and swing again. Success is on the way!”
